gpscom.gr, rebuilt from the ground up.

GPScom has sold GPS trackers, fleet telematics and two-way radios from Thessaloniki since 2001. We replaced its old store design with a new one built from scratch, and rewrote the catalogue, languages, search, shipping and speed underneath it, without taking the shop offline.

Live at gpscom.gr since October 2026, in Greek and English.

What changed

The old site and the new one, area by area.

  • Design

Before A stock CS-Cart theme with a third-party mega menu and hard-coded footer links.

Now Our own design system with light and dark themes, a new header, mega menu and footer menus the shop edits itself.

  • Phones

Before Desktop pages shrunk to fit.

Now A bottom tab bar for menu, search, cart, account and contact, with every tap target at least 44 px.

  • Product pages

Before 533 descriptions under 150 characters, and 5,032 images hotlinked from other sites.

Now Rewritten descriptions, quick-spec cards, comparable specs on 1,107 products, and every image on the store as WebP.

  • Search

    Before Searches returned no results.

Now Our own ranked search index, with filters in a sidebar.

  • English

Before 750 English interface labels showed Greek, and Greek addresses sometimes served English.

Now Checkout, e-mails, order statuses, forms, menus, filters and 16 content pages in English, and one language per address.

  • Speed

Before 391 of 410 homepage images were PNG, 2.5 MB of a 3.9 MB page, plus a 131 KB web font without Greek letters.

Now WebP served automatically, responsive image sizes, a 51.5 KB self-hosted font with Greek, Brotli compression and deferred third-party scripts.

  • Prices & shipping

Before Rounding could charge €69.01 for a product shown at €69.00, and EU orders had no shipping prices.

Now Prices stored with VAT so the shelf price is what gets charged, and shipping by weight to all 27 EU countries.

  • Newsletter

Before Sign-ups were saved, but no e-mail was ever delivered.

Now A new sign-up dialog and welcome e-mail, sent through the store’s mail server.

What shoppers get now

  • A design that fits the brand

A closed set of colours, spacing and radii used everywhere, in light and dark, with contrast raised to meet accessibility guidelines.

  • Find the right device fast

Working search, filters by use (cars, boats, pets, trucks…) and 51 filter pages that Google can index.

  • Specs you can compare

Battery, weight, network and geofence at a glance on every tracker, and normalised specs across the whole catalogue.

  • A clearer checkout

Every checkout step redesigned, with suggested accessories, clear shipping options and order e-mails restyled to match.

  • Greek and English

The full store in both languages, including payment and shipping methods, statuses, mails and blog posts.

  • Built for phones

A bottom tab bar, an off-canvas menu and layouts checked at 320, 390, 768 and 1440 px with no sideways scrolling.

How we rebuilt it

A new theme and a custom add-on on top of the existing CS-Cart store, so orders, customers and integrations kept running throughout.

  1. A new theme

A custom CS-Cart theme with its own design tokens, 25 stylesheets and 83 template overrides. A thin reset layer keeps the platform’s base styles from leaking into the new design.

    • Smarty
    • Design tokens
  2. A custom add-on

Our add-on holds the header, footer, hero and homepage blocks, the search index, the newsletter and the indexable filter pages, so the shop can update content from its admin.

    • PHP
    • CS-Cart add-on
    • JavaScript
  3. Catalogue tools

More than 100 scripts that audit and repair the catalogue: specs, descriptions, SEO fields, tags, weights, image localisation and WebP conversion, all re-runnable.

    • PHP
    • MySQL
    • WebP
  4. Languages & SEO

Translation files pushed and pulled from the database, one language per address with hreflang, a rewritten robots.txt and an llms.txt generated from the catalogue.

    • hreflang
    • robots.txt
    • llms.txt
  5. Checkout & shipping

VAT-inclusive pricing, EU shipping zones by weight, VAT-number checks that return the legal company name, and payment descriptions that name the order.

Speed & security

Faster, safer, easier to run

The work behind the design: images, fonts, caching, security headers and the move from the staging copy to the live store.

  • Images served as WebP automatically when the browser supports it
  • A self-hosted Greek and Latin font instead of a web font without Greek letters
  • Brotli compression and caching rules so returning visitors always get the current design
  • Security headers: HSTS, nosniff, referrer and permissions policies, and private files locked down
  • Default cron passwords replaced and a payment credential no longer stored on orders
  • A scripted, reversible switch from the staging copy to the live store

Problems we fixed along the way

A redesign is also the moment to fix what visitors never see. Numbers are what we measured on the old site.

  1. A new design on an old platform

    The problem
The store runs on CS-Cart, whose base styles cover the grid, forms and the whole checkout: one product page uses 108 of its classes. Dropping them would mean rewriting the shop.
    What we did
We kept the base and added a reset layer that neutralises only the rules that bleed into the new markup, scoped to the new components.

Result A completely new look with every CS-Cart feature, add-on and integration still working.

  2. A catalogue of 1,107 products

    The problem
Specs lived in free text, 640 short descriptions were just the product name, and only 8% of products had tags.
    What we did
Scripts extract and normalise specs into 14 device families, write short descriptions, SEO fields and tags, and can be run again whenever products are added.

Result Comparable specs and filters across the whole catalogue.

  3. Images that belonged to someone else

    The problem
5,032 of 5,736 description images were loaded from other websites, so they could break or slow down at any time.
    What we did
Every image was downloaded to the store, converted to WebP, and oversized ones were shrunk by 3.6 to 7.7 times.

Result All 5,736 images now load from gpscom.gr itself.

  4. The right language at every address

    The problem
The platform guessed the language from the browser, so Greek pages could be served in English. That confused shoppers and broke the language signals on 1,377 pages for Google.
    What we did
One language per address, 750 English labels restored, and the checkout, mails, statuses and pages translated.

Result A complete English store alongside the Greek one, with correct hreflang.

  5. Charged exactly what is shown

    The problem
Prices were stored before VAT, so rounding could turn €69.00 on the shelf into €69.01 at checkout.
    What we did
We moved the whole catalogue to VAT-inclusive prices with fixed precision.

Result The price on the page is the price charged.

  6. A fix that was never served

    The problem
CS-Cart names its compiled CSS by file names, not content, so a change could leave the old bundle in place. One customer still saw "the old website" after launch.
    What we did
Pages and bundles now revalidate on every visit, a tool forces browsers onto the current bundle, and every change is verified in the served CSS before it counts as done.

Result Every visitor sees the current design.

Checked like a product

  • Every page measured in a headless browser: no sideways overflow at 320, 390, 768 and 1440 px
  • Tap targets at least 44 × 44 px, one h1 per page and no skipped heading levels
  • Only design-system colours and spacing allowed in component styles
  • Audit scripts for product content, pages and description markup, plus a clean server error log after each change
