Who this is for: you win some games and lose some, mostly to tactics.
Goals
- Spot most one and two move tactics before your opponent does.
- Win king and pawn endings with the opposition.
- Know the first 8 to 10 moves of one opening as White and one defence to 1.e4 and 1.d4 as Black.
- Play at a steady pace: do not use up your clock in the first ten moves.
Weekly plan (4 to 5 hours)
- Courses: Back-rank mates, Endgame 3: Pawn races and breakthroughs, Middlegame 3: Discovered attacks, deflection and decoys, Discovered attacks, Endgame fundamentals: king and pawn, Middlegame 4: Removing the defender and sacrifices, Endgame 4: Rook against pawn and the Lucena.
- Puzzles (30 a day): themes fork, pin, skewer, discovered attack, back rank, deflection, hanging piece. One Puzzle Rush a day for speed.
- Games (6 a week): 10 or 15 minutes with an increment (10 | 5 or 15 | 10). Review every loss.
- Openings: add one White course and one Black course to the opening lines trainer. Review the due lines every day (5 minutes).
- Endgame: once a week, play a king-and-pawn ending from the Learn hub against the coach.
How to measure progress
- Rapid rating 1000 to 1200 with no question mark.
- Puzzle rating 1100 or more.
- Review accuracy 70 to 75 percent.
- Fewer than two blunders per game in your review.
Common mistakes at this level
- Learning ten openings. Learn one deeply.
- Attacking without enough pieces.
- Ignoring the endgame. Many games at this level are decided by one pawn.
- Playing blitz all day. It builds habits, bad ones too. Slower games teach more.
Tip: when you lose, open Game Review, tap Mistake to jump to your biggest error and ask: which puzzle theme is this?
